Bodhana is proud to announce that we are now accepting clients for our newest service - Therapeutic Tabletop Role Playing Games. This unique service offers an alternative to traditional group therapy. The group utilizes tabletop role playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons or Vampire: The Masquerade, as well as a host of games designed for children aged 5 and up to help deal with a myriad of behavioral and mental health issues. It uses the narrative style of role playing to enable clients to explore life situations, rehearse and develop coping skills, and also helps develop creative problem solving skills. The unlimited creative potential of the role playing hobby allows for any number of situations to be designed and targeted to the client. The group format added with the shared goals of the story within the game gives players a natural incentive to work together, providing a format for the development and furthering of social engagement skills.
Each group is overseen by two Master's level Therapists with years of experience working with children and adolescents in varying settings from community based to residential facilities. The Therapists are also experienced role players and Game Masters with decades of gaming under their belt. The two person group allows for increased focus on the participants while also provided greaqt opportunities to see reactions and skill progression. Each client begins with an intake process using a standard intake form to discover what the person and their support team would like to work on. Then the person is also given a short questionnaire about what types of games and themes they feel comfortable with and things that make them feel uncomfortable. This all helps aid in the creation of their character, which is done with the Therapist to help put elements of the person into the character to help construct what we call their "Therapeutic Avatar."
The client then joins a group of 3-6 persons who engage in adventures together, creating a flowing story and responding either individually or collaboratively to the challenges introduced by the Therapist. These challenges are crafted to help use the simplicity and engagement of play to work on skills and challenges.
Costs for sessions are $40 for a two hour session. Sliding scale is negotiable. Sessions are conducted weekly and progress is discussed quarterly to maintain currency and consistency of outcomes. Insurance acceptance needs to be determined by the client or their guardian.
